Our Chapter Representative

Breanna Reyes - Class of 2018

I am the current Chapter Alumni Rep for the UCSD chapter, and I look forward to working with this years steering to help HaU.  I grew up in San Ysidro/Tijuana, so I decided to attend UCSD where I was accepted as a Revelle College student. I recently graduated in 2018 with a B.A. in Global Health and a double minor in Biology and Chicanx/Latinx Arts/Humanities (CLAH).  At this moment, I am working on my Masters in Public Health with a concentration in Health Promotion and Education at CSUSM.  I also work full time as a Sexual and Reproductive Health Educator in the South Bay area.  However, I am not your typical Sex Ed teacher, because not only do I work in the traditional school setting, but I also work with youth who are in the juvenile justice system, are on probation/parole, and are teen moms.  You may see me from time to time at HaU events, so feel free to talk to me as I am happy to meet you all!

Darlene Lopez - Class of 2013

Undergraduate School: Revelle College, UCSD

Graduate School: USC Annenberg, Class of 2018

Current Work: Latin Music Label Relations, Apple Music

Future Goal: Start my own business and brand to create a space for Women of Color and marginalized folks

HaU provided the opportunity for me to be a leader and for me to go outside of myself and see how other people maneuvered through their journey in higher education.  The Hermanas provided that community where I could feel connected to the people around me, but it also showed me how much work we still have to do.  Now, HaU provides a new community of women who are in different phases of their lives and careers, and I feel like a student again!  I'm able to access these women and learn from them.  It's like a whole new community with familiar journeys, but to the next level.

Alejandra Dolores - Class of 2016

My name is Alejandra Dolores, I was born and raised in Bell Gardens, CA, and I graduated from UCSD in the spring of 2016 with a double major in Human Development and Spanish Literature.  I currently work as a College Counselor for KIPP SoCal Public School supporting high school students on their path to and through college.  Graduate school is next on my list, and my goal is to continue to work in education and serve first-generation, underrepresented students of color.  I joined HaU during my first year of college and served as the Public Relations Chair and Co-Chair during undergrad, in addition to serving as an Alumni Chapter Representative after graduation.  HaU is a vibrant community of supportive Hermanas who gave me a home away from home through the various challenges of being a first-generation college student at a predominately white institution.  To this day, I thank this organization for all the growth, support, love and friendships that it has given me.  Even now, my Hermanas are some of my closest friends and I love seeing this organization continue to provide Hermandad to many individuals throughout the years.  Poder de la Mujer!

Degree: Physiology and Neuroscience, minor in Cognitive Science and Humanities

Hola! My name is Mónica, and I am a proud Hermana from the graduating class of 2018.  Coming to UCSD, I struggled to find my place on campus because being Latinx at UCSD is hard! I was struggling in my classes and in my head space because I felt alienated - it was hard to always go to class or to apply for internships and never see anyone that looked like me and/or understood what it was like going to UCSD while being a PoC.  After finding Hermanas Unidas so much changed for me and for the better.  Hermanas gave me a home away from home, but most importantly a communidad that was real and authentic.  My hermanas understood my struggles, and were there for me whether it was to push me to study harder or to dance banda and have a carne asada to feel a little more at home.  Due to this, I was able to excel in school and the work place while having a solid support system close by since my family was so far away.  I'm so proud to say now that I work as a Molecular and Cell Biologist in the Research and Development department of Thermo Fisher Scientific.  In the next few years, I will be applying to medical school in hopes of becoming the Latinx doctor I've always dreamed of being! Thank you to HaU for being there for me and helping me become the alumnae I am today.  Poder de la mujer!

Major: Human Biology, B.S. UCSD

I joined Hermanas Unidas since freshman year for its core values resonated with my own: Advocacy for the empowerment of women throughout their collegiate career in institutions that continue to exclude women minorities.  First as an active member and later as secretary of the steering committee, this organization was a large part of my community involvement at UCSD.  After graduation, I plan to take a gap year(s) before I apply to graduate school for a Master's in Public Health.  As an educated Latina, I feel a strong inclination towards utilizing the knowledge and opportunities I gain in my college education for the service of the Latinx community as well as for other minorities.  Regardless of where my career takes me, I will carry my roots wherever I go, including HaU.

Geena Friera - Class of 2019

Major: Sociology - Culture and Communications

I graduated from UCSD in June 2019 as a Revelle College student.  I am currently aspiring to be a Physicians Assistant (PA) and go into the NAVY.  After graduation, it was hard deciding what my next move would be since I still have a couple of pre-requisite classes to take for PA school and I need to gain some patient care experiences.  I recently decided to put school on hold till next year and focus on trying to work full time as an EMT in Los Angeles county.  Hermanas Unidas at UCSD really helped me establish a place of belonging as I had joined Greek life at the same time, but I felt like something was missing and it was my Latin culture that I needed to express.  HaU allowed me to do that from dancing salsa in the courtyard to having deep talks about healthy relationships.  It really gave me a place to grow and be who I am.
